| Stayed really late working at The Company tonight -- as in I'm just getting home at 4-ish a.m. -- but that's because I took the early evening off, as Bob Dylan was in town and I had a free ticket. One of our photographers gets VIP tickets gratis for the season at the venue, as he shoots most shows -- and even though Dylan prohibited photographers at his show (only case of that at the venue this year), the tickets would've gone to waste otherwise. So after a comedy of errors involving the logistics of meeting up with Vasiliy (the photog) and obtain said tickets, we got in. Quite a good show, with a varied, interesting set list; Dylan seemed engaged in the material and even appeared to come close to a smile from time to time; and an excellent band. I don't think Vasiliy or his brother enjoyed themselves that much, as they knew nothing of Dylan and a live show really isn't the best introduction: Unless you're into Dylan and know the songs, his live delivery can be indecipherable -- I couldn't make out the first couple songs, but then I wasn't actually in the amphitheater at the time. It doesn't help, in this context, that Dylan and band played new arrangements to just about all the songs except the newer material from Modern Times. (I, however, was quite fond of the new arrangements, particularly the shuffley take on "Tangled Up in Blue.") So a live Dylan show could be a bit impenetrable to the uninitated; it could just sound like a couple hours of bleats. My other colleague AJ seemed to enjoy himself, though.
And of course, half the fun is squeein' at the obscurities and deep album cuts he pulls out -- this time, he astonished me by launching into "Shooting Star" from 1989's Oh Mercy and the somewhat odd title track from the following year's Under the Red Sky. He saved "Like A Rolling Stone" and "All Along the Watchtower" for the encore -- only one encore this time, sad to say.
Also tonight, I consumed my first ever Nick Tahoe's Garbage Plate (they have a booth at the venue). It was a Definitive Rochester thing I had never done, so I'm glad I did it. I don't care to repeat it, though. Actually, it seemed kind of anticlimatic to me -- I was expecting something even more sloppy and artery-busting. Of course, I didn't do the true Garbage Plate experience since I ordered it without macaroni salad and I'm not a drunken college kid at 3 in the morning after last call. (For the non-Rochesterian science-fiction fans on my f-list: This gastronomical phenomenon makes a cameo appearance in one of Rob Sawyer's Neanderthal Parallax books.)
And now, for bed.

| Shawn Johnson got her well-deserved gold on balance beam. Jonathan Horton, Bojoette's imaginary boyfriend, got a silver on bars. Poor Lolo Jones hit the ninth hurdle in her race, lost out on a fairly certain gold medal, and ended up empty handed. She handled the television interview immediately afterward with grace.
The USA women's softball team has played outstanding ball, and they had a tough game that went into extra innings with Japan. It was a great effort by both teams, but USA pulled out the win and are headed for semi-finals. I love those girls. It's a stinking shame that baseball and softball are being dropped from the Olympics after this year. Softball, especially, allows girl and women athletes to shine.
If curling is an Olympic sport, and, hey, I watch it, then softball should remain in the Olympics. So there. | comments: 4 comments / Comment |

| So recently I was at Best Buy, and I saw a two-disc DVD of the Three Stooges on sale for $6.99. Obviously I couldn't pass it up, I mean, it's the Stooges! So I'm opening them now to finally watch them, and on the cover of both disc cases, plus the box they actually come in, the Stooges pictures are Moe, Larry, and Curly. But Curly isn't in any of the episodes! Well, maybe in some of the animated clips, I don't know. But in the five shorts that are included, it's all Shemp! Now, I like Shemp and all, but come on! No Curly! Sheesh, you get what you pay for :-P
[EDIT] GAAAH!!! I LIED! The very first episode has Curly in it, and it's fantastic. The other four are with Shemp. Okay, I feel a little better :) | comments: 1 comment / Comment |
| 9 AMerican Eagle aircraft grounded after being damaged by TSA inspectors during security check.
Nine American Eagle airplanes were grounded Tuesday after a TSA inspector, conducting an overnight security check, used sensitive instrument probes to climb onto the parked aircraft at Chicago's O'Hare Airport, aviation sources tell ABCNews.com....
...Pilots were furious at the TSA misstep. "The brilliant employees used an instrument located just below the cockpit window that is critical to the operation of the onboard computers," one pilot wrote on an American Eagle internet forum. "They decided this instrument, the TAT probe, would be adequate to use as a ladder," the pilot wrote.
Another pilot wrote the TSA agents, "are now doing things to our aircraft that may put our lives, and the lives of our passengers at risk."
The TSA has been conducting such overnight spot checks at airports around the country. | comments: Comment |

| About a woman who has 200 orgasms a day. That works out to about 8 orgasms per hour. She suffers from a rare condition called Permanent Sexual Arousal Syndrome (PSAS), where too much blood flow to the genitals means almost any vibration (a hair dyer, a train passing on its tracks, a photocopier, loud music at a pub) will start a build-up leading to an orgasm within minutes. Note that this is unrelated to hypersexuality or nymphomania.
A growing number of people aren't waiting for car companies to come out with mass produced electric cars, and are converting their cars and trucks to all-electric on their own. They claim that not only does it save a lot of money long term, but it's really easy, too.

| So, I'm actually kinda' freakin' out about leaving tomorrow. I wasn't earlier, but now I am. I love my family. We don't actually DO much together, but we're always together and it's almost always awesome. I complain about Mom a lot, and Dad's stubborn sometimes, but I love my family.
Just eight weeks until I can come back and see them again. I know that time can go by really quickly. At the same time, though, I don't want my time at college to go quickly, or my life for that matter. I just... want my parents to stay safe and sane during this time. I never want any time I leave to be the last time I see them, you know?
Not to mention my cat. Egads, I love Mimi.
I know I'll be okay. I know this won't be a huge deal after tomorrow. I just... I've got so much responsibility up in Pensacola. I've already got to write a speech for Saturday, to give at Honors Orientation. The work just doesn't stop, because I'm too damn ambitious for my own good.
I love every minute of it, though. My tummy just feels all knotted and I'm holding back tears and I love my family too much. Why is Pensacola 450 miles away from Orlando?
Oh, yeah, because UWF was the only way I could actually afford to go to college. | comments: 12 comments / Comment |

| | So, I'm back from Gen Con. I might subject you all to a rehash of my trip later, but I thought you all might be more interested in pretty pictures instead. While only a small proportion of attendees wear costumes (including the girls with little demon horns or furry tails but otherwise normally dressed, the goths who are obviously real goths and thus not costuming, and men in kilts, it's less than 20%--true costumers are less than 5% by my estimation), a small percentage of 25000 people is still plenty of people. And they tend to stand out. ( Very image heavy. ) | comments: Comment |
| I actually went on the honors retreat this year, unlike last year! This year I got to go as staff, which was a much more enjoyable way to do it. kellerinablack8 was also on staff in addition to some of my other best friends. It was totally awesome! I shared a room with the honors director because it was the only room with beds, and I wanted a bed because of hurting my back on Saturday night. (For those of you who asked, it was just a candlestick, heh!) Turns out she snores, but I'm used to that at home so it didn't really bother me! :D
There were definitely some awesome people in the incoming honors group, but there are also some who are going to be a pain in the butt. Speaking of pains in the butt, I had to voice interpret for several hours, because they didn't realize that a few of the incoming students didn't have sign skills up to par with the others. Additionally, one of the speakers doesn't mind one-on-one conversations in ASL, but doesn't feel comfortable giving lectures in it, so I did voice-to-sign AND sign-to-voice for him. But they say they're going to pay me, so it's not all bad.
I definitely had fun this time around but these last two weeks of summer are killing me, mostly because I spend so much time at the hospital that I can't do stuff around the house. It's a necessary evil though, because I'll be working as few as 6 hours per week during the school year, and I need the money. | comments: 2 comments / Comment |

| I am very happy with the Sennheiser MX75 sport headphones I bought from Amazon at the end of July. Finally I have a pair of phones that do not fall out of my ears when I am running.
I thought I was going to be even happier when I received my $10 rebate from Sennheiser. To get the rebate you had to send not only a copy of your receipt, the UPC from the box, and a completed form, but also a set of old headphones. The last part was slightly annoying, as I had to use a special mailer package instead of an ordinary envelope, and extra postage. But I figured it was worth $10.
So I get an email from Sennheiser about 10 days after submitting, directing me to a Web site with the status of my rebate. I thought that was very cool, as usually it is weeks before you hear about rebates. But I was not pleased with the message there: Rebate denied because no valid UPC from MX75 was submitted.
What bullshit. I go to all this trouble and then the person who opened my package either lost the UPC or pretended I did not send it. I clicked on the support link to see if there was recourse. It turned out that customers who got the no UPC message could resubmit by sending in either the original UPC or a copy of it to a different address. That did me no good. I had sent the only copy of the UPC to them in the first place. I wrote a one-page letter explaining what happened and asking them to keep their end of the bargain. We'll see what happens. | comments: 2 comments / Comment |
| | Subject: | A reflection on an image at Corpus Christi 121 st.+ The Cloisters | | Time: | 05:52 pm |

| Friends, Went with Fr John Bostwick to the Cloisters, the Medieval art museum in New York which I pictured here earlier this month. We then visited Corpus Christi church on the upper west side which is perhaps my favorite of the principle New York churches from the point of view of beauty. We had lunch at a cafe opposite St John the Divine and then I came home. I am tired from these days of unusual activity. Tomorrow back to the library and a steadier flow of time... hoping to retain however the glimpses of the moments of these good days.
I will just share two moments from today , one of Corpus Christi and also from the Cloisters. I will conclude with the church and put a larger version with a note on what I find attractive in particular, for the larger photos, from Corpus Christi and the Cloisters please click to the right here.( Read more... ) So just these...I do rather wonder if generally people feel what I did as to the church picture? anyway it is what I have always felt about that church...Perhaps I should add another photo or two to give a larger sense of the interior but that for me is the key point. today just these and what have you? yours +Seraphim

| | Subject: | Judging trustworthiness in the face | | Time: | 10:00 pm |
|
| http://www.mindhacks.com/blog/2008/08/judging_trustworthin.html The Boston Globe has a fantastic article on the psychology of trustworthiness judgements and how they can be taken advantage of by con-men.
The article explores studies which have looked at various influences on our judgements of trust. One of the most interesting parts is where they cover research that has systematically altered pictures until the researchers generated faces that seem the least trustworthy (picture of the left) and most trustworthy (picture of the right).
According to recent work by Nikolaas Oosterhof and Alexander Todorov of Princeton's psychology department, we form our first opinions of someone's trustworthiness through a quick physiognomic snapshot. By studying people's reactions to a range of artificially-generated faces, Oosterhof and Todorov were able to identify a set of features that seemed to engender trust. Working from those findings, they were able to create a continuum: faces with high inner eyebrows and pronounced cheekbones struck people as trustworthy, faces with low inner eyebrows and shallow cheekbones untrustworthy.
In a paper [pdf] published in June, they suggested that our unconscious bias is a byproduct of more adaptive instincts: the features that make a face strike us as trustworthy, if exaggerated, make a face look happy - with arching inner eyebrows and upturned mouths - and an exaggerated "untrustworthy" face looks angry - with a furrowed brow a |
